10 Things To Do In the 15 Minutes Before Your Job Interview
You updated your resume, researched the company, practiced your answers, and picked out the right outfit. Now it’s 15 minutes before the big job interview you’ve been preparing for. What do you do?
In today’s hiring market, interviews move fast. Whether you’re walking into an office, joining a video call from home, or navigating a multi-step hiring process, employers are paying close attention to how candidates present themselves in the moment.
The good news? You don’t need to cram more preparation into those final minutes. You just need to reset, refocus, and walk in confident and ready.
Here are some things you should (or shouldn’t) do right before your interview:
01. Stop reviewing your resume. t this point, last-minute memorization usually creates more stress than confidence. You already know your experience. Instead of trying to rehearse every detail, focus on speaking naturally about your accomplishments, strengths, and career goals. Recruiters can tell when answers sound overly scripted.
02. Check your tech (before a virtual interview). Virtual and hybrid interviews are now a standard part of hiring, and technical issues can create unnecessary distractions. Test your camera and microphone, silence notifications, double-check your connection, and close your tabs. You don’t need a perfect setup. You just need one that shows you came prepared.
03. Be friendly with everyone you encounter. If you are hired, you’ll start off with your new coworkers on the right foot… first impressions matter!
04. Check the job description one more time. Not word-for-word… just scan it. Focus on: top responsibilities, key skills, and any recurring themes or priorities. This helps keep your answers aligned with what the employer actually needs right now.
05. Decide on two things you want to be remembered for. It’s important to highlight your knowledge and qualifications for the position you’re interviewing for, and honing in on a few key traits will help you stand out.
06. Keep your posture in mind. Confidence is communicated before you even answer the first question. Stand up straight. Relax your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Make eye contact. Even in virtual interviews, your energy and body language matter more than most candidates realize.
07. Avoid checking your phone. Scrolling social media, checking emails, or responding to work messages right before an interview keeps your brain distracted. Use those final minutes to stay mentally present instead.
08. Review your notes, but don’t do any more research. You should be done preparing and rehearsing; any new information you come across during this time period allows for confusion.
09. Look in a mirror. Go to the restroom to take a final look and wash your hands. A presentable appearance and clean hands are crucial for a great first impression… you don’t want to be remembered for having sweaty palms!
10. Think happy thoughts. Thinking about pleasant topics will not only put you in a great mindset, but will also help you go in with a genuine smile and sense of excitement.
The 15 minutes before your interview shouldn’t feel frantic. You’re not trying to become a different person in those final moments. You’re simply putting yourself in the best position to show who you are, what you bring to the table, and why you’re ready for the opportunity.
Keep in mind that you already impressed the hiring manager on paper enough to land the interview… now it’s time to convince them you’re the perfect candidate for the position.
